William Neal Brudenell (1965)

These yearbooks will have a new home with Ron Payne, Class of ‘64. So, they no longer are available. ( at least from me).

I have a 1963 and a 1964 yearbook that I would love to send to someone. If interested, please let me know. Bill Brudenell, 208-921-1634 (cell for text messages).

Bill Brudenell has inspired me to do a little clean out as well. I too have a 1964 Chattanooga High yearbook

that needs a new home. I'll mail to the first Dynamo reaching me by text at 512-674-5734. Thanks for the inspiration Bill.

I gave my 63 Dynamo to the Old City, now CSAS, since it was the last year on Third Street.

Roddy Robertson (1967)

I haven't actively participated much with my City High Forum and this may not be the preferred way of communicating this information, but I was reminded today since Jimmy Hyma, a long-time friend from my class 67, who every year wishes me a Happy Birthday, didn't do it this year as he went to be with the Lord Jesus on January 22nd or 23 of this year.
I haven't seen any info coming out on our forum so I assume you were unaware. He was one of the finest examples of a true Christian that I have ever known.
Just thought everyone should know.

Sincerely,
Rod Robertson

Dennis Dobbs (1967)

I just learned that (Daisy) Dianne Hood (Sitton) passed away January 11, 2021. She was preceded by her husband Doug on January 8, 2021. A link to her funeral site with memorial photos and service video is https://www.heritagebattlefield.com/tributes/DougandDianne-Sitton.

Dianne was a wonderful person who I have not seen since attending City. I still remember meeting her the first time at a 7th grade dance. We were very close for 4-5 years then lost touch. I am very sad to hear about her passing and send condolences to her family and friends.

Huey Long (1967)

Met Jimmy Hyma at Normal Park in 1st grade. He lived right across the street from the school (as did Jim Floyd and Malcolm Short). We were classmates for the next 12 years! Sorry to hear of his passing.

Richard Merle Waugaman (1966)

So sorry about Jimmy Hyma's death. But good to read Huey Long's message. I met Jimmy, Huey, Jim Floyd, and Malcom Short only in 7th grade, when I entered Northside Junior High. What a long time ago!

I was notified by a family member that Bill Tollett (class of 1967) passed away June 10, 2021.  This was all the information that I received.

Cyndi Brock (Harris) (1971)

For those in the 1966 class and the 1969 class, I'm sad to report that both my brothers have died. Ty Brock (1966) died in March of 2020 and Byron Brock (1969) died June 22 of this year.

I'm so sorry to hear that Cyndi. Ty and I played trombone in the marching band, the concert band, and the jazz band. I spoke with him a few years ago. He was a good man.

Ralph Irwin Miller (1965)

So sorry to hear of the loss of the Brock brothers. I didn't  know Byron but I remember Ty very well. He was a very intelligent guy and a talented trombone player. I was a Junior when he entered City. I got to know Ty on the bus going to the band contest in Bristol, Va. He laughed at all my jokes and I knew right away he was a smart kid. I'm sorry we didn't have band reunions as we spent so much time together in high school only to have it end at graduation. I know they both will be remembered by many

To Cyndi Brock. My deepest condolences to you and your family. Byron and I were in the same class. We did not have any classes together but I remember seeing him in the halls and he would always speak. This is not goodbye my friend but I will see you in the morning.RIP.

It's good to hear Rimmy Miller mention that band contest in Bristol. We had a fine band. And that's not just my opinion--we did well in regional and state competitions. In Bristol, at one rehearsal, I remember the director asking the drummer from another school to make more of a crescendo on the snare drum. He just couldn't do it. He then asked our drummer, who went from pianissimo to fortissimo!

Michael Claude Haggard (Michael Haggard) (1966)

November 2015 I had the pleasure to talk with Ty (Horace) Brock at a concert by Jericho Brass at the Depot in Ringgold Georgia.  He was still playing music with the Trombone and Lynn Moore from the Class of 1965 was playing the Tuba.  First time I had seen either of them since leaving City High.  I attended from 1964 to 1966 and with all the great things City gave me I have to admit the best part of being there was the opportunity to play with the band and be involved in all of the music program.  Some of the finest people you would want as friends.
My heart goes out to the family.

Chris Kidwell (1966)

Merle and Michael.  I agree about your comments about our marching band. The drummers were Gary Mason, Harold Coe, Charles Adams, and me. Great band. Great times. Great memories.

Chris is too modest to say it, but I believe he was the drummer who executed that exciting crescendo on the snare drum.

I appreciate this forum, and the way it brings back such pleasant memories. I'm sorry it started with Ty's death, in this case.

Ralph and Chris can confirm if I'm right about this, but didn't Ty and the rest of us all stay in the homes of band members of the Bristol high school at that contest? I vividly recall that my hosts owned a new Ford Mustang. I thought that was extremely cool. And didn't Mr. Tilson tell us after our performance that it was one of the rare times that he'd heard a work of music performed perfectly?

Some of us also performed in the all-state band in Memphis (in 1966?). One memorable experience there was feeling the floor shake. Yes, a small earthquake, the first for many of us.

Pat Hagan (1968)

I was a sophomore in 1966 and I thought I was a decent drummer, so I joined rhe marching band.  Seeing Chris Kidwell play the drums I knew I was way out of my league.  All the drummers in 1966 were excellent!  I might have held the cymbals that year, but I knew I had no business there. Great band in 1966 for sure.  I started a band and played a few gigs at dances and frat parties.  Scott Short was close to Chris Kidwell as a drummer, but Chris was #1.

Don't forget Bill Meadows. Our senior year '64-65 was the year we went to Chicago for the Midwest Music Association convention. Only four bands participated. One was from Joliet Township outside of the Windy City, one from Arkansas, one from Ottawa Canada and City High. I got to hear the Canadian band and it was amazing.

Yes, Rick we did stay in private homes in Bristol. The band director at Virginia High was somewhat of a mentor to Tilson. When he left Elizabethton High to go to VA High, he recommended Tilson as his replacement. Then when Cass left CHS, he encouraged Tilson to apply for the job. When the VA High kids came to Tri-State, Al Miller's local band contest, we kept members of their band. We had two guys at our house for the weekend returning the favor the folks in VA did for me. George McCashin and I stayed with an attorney and his wife while we were in Bristol. He told me his secretary had kids in the band and he and his wife always kept kids during the Southeastern Band Festival which was actually held at Tennessee High which looked like a castle. Bristol always included a parade in their festival. I was one of the lucky ones who got to March down the middle of the street which was the stare line. While dodging the horse droppings I got to limp as one side was higher the other. Great memories. During the first night our host's cat decided to get in bed with me.

Bill Meadows!  I forgot about him.  He was a terrific drummer.  I could play the triangle, barely.

Kathy Harbison (Willard) (1973)

I'm seeing all these band posts (which were just a bit before my time)  Ralph Miller, you were my band director (I know you remember that) during quite a bit of change at City.  I had the most fun in band and was drum major for 2 years.  Brings back good memories!!!

Ralph Irwin Miller (1965)

I sure do remember you Kathy. When I returned to City as band director in July of 1972, I knew there were some fine musicians in the band. My friend Carl Jones had been Casavant's student teacher and then took the job when Cass resigned. You don't replace a legend. Carl was perfect for the job but became discouraged when almost half the band left in the summer of 1971. I was working in the summer band program with Carl and Linda Pennebaker (Northside band director and CHS band alum herself). Carl recommended me for the job as I had just graduated from UTC. Phifer was ready to hire me but a dignitary at the City schools' Central Office nixed it. He wanted someone already in the system so I went to East Lake and Hardy Junior High schools. The next year Mr Craven recommended me and the new principal Dr Charles Kendrick agreed. When I had the first rehearsal it was to play at the airport for our award winning cheerleaders returning from camp. Kathy was drum major, but she could have been the director. Her skill and leadership was evident. I stood back and let the band do their thing and it was great. From then on I knew the talent was there, the leadership was there and the desire to do their best was what the City band had just as it did in the 1960s. I had two great years there and would have stayed but fewer kids were coming up from the junior high program and eventually there would be around thirty or so in band so I took a job in Cleveland where we marched 150. Great to hear from you Kathy

Ralph, thanks for that tribute to Kathy. I just want to mention an earlier drum major, Jensi Peck. She helped train the new members of the marching band. In my case, that consisted in her yelling at me, "Rick Waugaman, lift your feet! You could trip over a matchstick." Yes, all these years later, those words still sting! So, Jensi, if you're reading this, I learned a couple of years ago that my orthopedic problems are related to congenital spinal stenosis. I knew I was born with a club foot, but I thought that was the end of it. No such luck. Two knee replacements later, I now have back problems that led to the diagnosis of a congenital problem. What I'm saying, Jensi, is it wasn't my fault! There, I feel better now.
