Sam Gross - Class Of 1961

Samuel David Gross, Jr., of Florence, AL, passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009, at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital after battling complications of diabetes. He was 65 years old. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 2, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church in Florence, with the Rev. Richard T. Gillespie officiating. Burial was Tuesday at Highland Memorial Park, Knoxville, Tenn. The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2009, at Elkins Funeral Home, who assisted the family. Mr. Gross was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel D. Gross, Sr. and Ruth Anderson Gross, and one grandchild, Elizabeth Anna Gross. Sam was born in Chattanooga, TN, grew up on Signal Mountain, and attended Chattanooga High School, graduating in 1961. He then attended the University of TN at Knoxville, where he earned degrees in both Chemical Engineering and in Metallurgy. Mr. Gross was employed by TVA, moved to Muscle Shoals, AL with the company, and had recently retired. He was an avid UT fan, an amateur radio operator (WA4JPK) and member of the Muscle Shoals Amateur Radio Club. He was a leader of Boy Scout Troop 75; he himself had attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Mr. Gross is survived by his wife, Alice Gross, of Florence; his children, Samuel Douglas Gross and wife, Melissa, of Columbia, S.C., Steven David Gross and wife, Anna, of Castleton, Vt., and George Daniel Gross and girlfriend, Amy, of Florence; his sister, Sally G. Martin and husband, Forrest, of Clifton Park, N.Y.; his brother, Kenneth A. Gross and wife, Patti, of Signal Mountain, TN.; and his grandchildren, Michael, John, Catherine and Gavin. [Another granddaughter, Rachel, was born later in 2009.] The family would like to give thanks to the staff of ECM ICU, the ECM sixth-floor West staff, and to all the doctors involved in Mr. Gross' care during his illness. The family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Florence,AL, or to the Muscle Shoals Amateur Radio Club.

Sally Gross (Martin) (1967)

This web site lists Sam's year of death as unknown.  It is stated in the first paragraph on his IN MEMORY page:  February 26, 2009.  Could someone get his name into that database where you can sort the people by "Year of Death?"  Thanks!
