I am saddened today to learn of Steve's death from heart disease, and ultimately, pneumonia at such an early age. I first met Steve in 9th grade at North Chattanooga Junior High. One day, my girlfriend, Debby Welch, and I swapped dates, thus beginning a long relationship with Steve that lasted well into high school. Steve was every bit a quiet, sweet-tempered gentleman who could play a mean Flamenco guitar. He would focus on a goal and give it his full attention. This obviously continued into adulthood as he had many awards and accomplishments that were listed in his obituaries. But what I took away from all of the articles on the websites that spoke of him, was that he reached out and touched the lives of thousands of humans no matter what their circumstances were in life. And lifted them to be a better person on this planet. His family must be so proud of his life and their role in it.

I was so surprised to find out Steve was ill and ultimately called Home.  Our paths had not crossed in many years but I kept up with him through the Methodist Church.  I remember meeting Steve at Northside Jr. High and he was always such a quiet but mannerly young man at such a young age.  He was always friendly to me and  had such a sweet smile.  From his obituary I realized how many lives he had touched in his short life through his ministry.  I know he will be missed by his family and church families.  I asked another Methodist Minister about Steve not long ago and his relpy was that "he was one of the kindest, most caring men I ever knew and he was so respected in the Methodist Church".  Steve, my friend you can now rest in peace with the Heavenly Angels and sit at the right hand of the Almighty who you told so many people about during your ministry.  I'm sorry I never heard you preach a sermon.  I'm sure I would've been touched by your words as so many were.  I will think of you, Mike Long, Jeff Pogue, Deidre Hughes Thrash and Lonnie Floyd among a few of my favorite people who are in Heaven now with you.  Everytime I see a hummingbird, a butterfly or look up at the stars at night I will see each of your sweet faces smiling down on me.   Farewell Steve and forever rest in peace.

I knew who Steve was in junior high school, but didn't really get to know him until he started dating Sue Jones. Sue and I attended the same church, and she brought Steve into the church where he ultimately became a member and a leader in our youth group. We were at a Wednesday evening youth group meeting when Steve felt the calling to the ministry. It was a special moment for all of us, because we had a chance to be a part of the beginning of this new chapter in his life. I lost track of Steve after he left Chattanooga, but in reading all of the stories about his successes (not HIS personal successes, but in bringing people to Christ) in the ministry, I am proud that he was my friend.

I just saw this post that Steve had passed.  I am devistated to know that.  We had kept in touch some during the years, but had not communicated to him in the past 4 or 5 years.  He and I roomated in an apartment after graduation and became good friends.  I was thinking about him a few months ago, to send him and email and see how he was doing, but as usual, put it off.  He served the ministry well, that I know.
